Why Grenada Is Every Foodie And Nature-Lover’s Dream Destination

The greenest of the Caribbean islands will delight with rainforests, waterfalls and incredible food.

Grenada, known as the “Spice Isle,” is a Caribbean island that boasts a host of natural wonders, from spices like cinnamon and nutmeg and tree-to-bar chocolate to some of the most glorious waterfalls and beaches in the world.

Travel blogger Richard Lee Massey made the journey from London courtesy of British Airways, where he discovered it’s an unspoiled island of natural bounty - and unbeatable food. With British Airways you can book with confidence, safe in the knowledge that you can change your date or destination if you need to.

Watch the video below (filmed pre Covid-19) to see all of Richard’s adventures, where he discovers waterfalls and samples the island’s signature dishes (sea moss smoothie, anyone?).

“Grenadians are incredibly passionate about their cuisine and my local tour guide, Tamika, took me down to the spice market in capital Saint George’s, which was laden with every spice you can imagine,” Richard explains.

After sampling aromatic, colourful spices and local delicacies like sea moss smoothies (made with condensed milk and nutmeg, cinnamon and bay leaf – good for the skin), it was time to try a “double” from My Place in Tamika’s hometown of Grenville (a double is a fried savoury flour pastry filled with chickpeas, peppers and cucumbers).

Grenada is also a haven for chocoholics. Belmont Estate is one of the island’s five tree-to-bar chocolate producers, where guests journey through the chocolate-making process – including walking barefoot on cocoa beans and learning how cinnamon is cut. The site, which dates back to the 17th century, when plantations were first established under French rule, now works as an agritourism destination and is owned by the Nyack family, the first Grenadians of East Indian descent to own an estate in Grenada.

In Grenada you can experience nature at its most majestic. The Grand Etang Forest Reserve is the place to spot Mona monkeys and river tube down the Balthazar River for a refreshing ride through the rainforest.

“In Grenada, you’re never too far away from a waterfall, which is great when hiking because you can always go for a quick dip,” says Richard.

Mount Carmel Falls, at 70 feet high, is a favourite local spot for a swim.

“One of the best things about Grenada is just how unspoiled it is. The beaches are stunning, the rainforests are incredibly lush and everything is just so quiet. It’s absolute bliss,” says Richard.
